Bakala features at the Northern Territory Travelling Film Festival this May – July!

One man’s bid to find a cure for a debilitating genetic disorder affecting his tiny island community is the backdrop for the short film Bakala.

The residents of Groote Eylandt off the coast of Arnhem Land are at high risk of inheriting the disease – a condition which has been likened to “locked-in” syndrome.

Although she’s best known as a designer, Alison Page found herself on Groote filming the story of Steve Bakala Wurramara.

Bakala blends truth and fiction to shine a light on the devastating impact of Machado-Joseph Disease – or MJD – on the Groote Islanders.

It’s one of the films screening during the Northern Territory Travelling Film Festival.
